This is a mural that was painted by my fourth grade class and is still standing to this day. I was responsible for designing, creating, and painting the tree. Weeks before the mural was to ever be painted, our art teacher told our whole grade about the mural, and that we should all think of something we wanted to put on it. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and it was the tree.

I wanted to draw a tree because I thought of trees as webs sometimes. The branches were a web. But they were a welcoming web, not like a spider's web. Trees built webs to catch the sun. Trees are also webs for people. They're good for climbing on, and the branches would grow into such perfectly wedged seats.

I drew the tree so a web might be built for people to come and be connected.

I tried to paint someone of every ethnicity, allowing them to meet - and if you can see it in the mural - and hold hands.
