Visual Essay

 

I wanted to look at the differences between tradition Western funerals and medieval Viking funerals.  Both have very different traditions.  While modern funerals involve interring the departed within the Earth, the Vikings placed the dead upon ships with all their processions.  They then set the ship adrift and on fire.  They believed this was the honorable means of passing onto the next life.  Below are pictures that illustrate both practices.
